Project Description

Kirsten* gave birth to twins at 26 weeks. The family were referred to Home-Start when the children were two years old.  They both had complex health needs including development delay and Autism. In particular, Kirsten’s son struggles with speech and his behaviour can be challenging.

A Home-Start volunteer, Helen*, was matched to the family to provide emotional and practical support to Kirsten who was finding the twins’ needs overwhelming.

Furthermore, with Kirsten having to work fewer hours, the family faced financial pressures and were unaware of the financial support available to them. Dad was concerned about having to take time off work to attend the children’s numerous hospital appointments.

Helen helped the family during their busy periods – nursery picks ups, early evening and bath time. She also helped Kirsten and the children attend activities and health appointments and assisted with the son’s speech and language sessions at home. Finally, she helped the family access the benefits they were entitled to.

The family were re-housed during Home-Start’s involvement so support was provided throughout this transition.

Kirsten is more connected to her community and involved in activities and her son’s speech has progressed. Feeling better able to manage, Kirsten’s emotional wellbeing has improved too.
