5 reasons why volunteering with Home-Start is great for you too!
We want you to get as much out of volunteering as you put into it. We also want you to enjoy it! To help ensure this, we’ll work hard to match you to an opportunity in your community that meets your needs – from supporting a family as a home visitor to helping out one of our local offices.
We asked some of our volunteers about their experience volunteering with Home-Start and what they’ve gained. Here’s what they said:
1. You’ll make friends.
Sometimes, life changes can leave us a bit isolated. Maybe you’ve recently moved to a new area. Or you’ve lost touch with friends over time. Volunteering with Home-Start will connect you with your community and help you build new friendships. As Tamsin says, “It’s made me feel more part of my community than I ever did before, even though I grew up here!”
2. You’ll develop skills, experience, and confidence.
Whether you’re studying or starting a career, looking for work or hoping to progress, volunteering can be a great way to learn and develop your skills. We offer ongoing training and regular supervision to help ensure you are making the most of your time with us. As Saira says, “I wasn’t happy at work, I knew I needed a change. Volunteering has helped me get the experience and find the courage to make this happen.”
3. You’ll give back.
At some time in your life, you’ve probably benefited from volunteers. Or maybe you feel like you’ve been fortunate, and you’d like to share that with others. Volunteering with Home-Start gives you the opportunity to give something back in your community – to help make it a better place. As Jane says, “Volunteering at the family group means I can use my skills and experience to help others. I love helping the parents play and bond with their children.”
4. You’ll feel happier and healthier.
Volunteering is good for your wellbeing. It will connect you with people that you might not otherwise meet and enable you to step outside your usual daily routine. Volunteering can also give you a renewed or different sense of purpose. As Spiro says, “Volunteering with Home-Start has made me realise just how much people need people. We all do. For me, being the highlight of a child’s week has been phenomenal.”
5. Why not?
Do you need another reason? Just 2 hours of your time can make a lifelong impact – on a young family facing tough times and on you. Register your interest here and take the first step in your volunteering journey with Home-Start. We can’t wait to welcome you to the team.
