Project Description
Viv*, Mike* and six children, who all have either behavioural disorders or autism diagnosis, were referred to Home-Start by their local authority.
Viv had depression and lacked support from Mike, who left her alone for long periods with the children. Viv was initially assessed as isolated and found it hard to cope with the children’s behaviour along with the household chores.
During weekly home visits, Emma* (the Home-Start volunteer) found that Viv was eager to share more of her worries and concerns. Emma shared information about local support groups and accompanied Viv to a family disability group. By spending a lot of time talking to Emma and being reassured she was a good mum, Viv’s confidence grew rapidly. The children quickly warmed to Emma as she spent quality time playing with them and listening. Viv is now able to manage the house chores, knowing the children are safe chatting to Emma, helping her to be more organized.
